Storing Your Food

Storage Secrets

Most dried and canned foods have storage instructions on their packaging. Fresh produce may not always have instructions so remember these tips:

  • Bread should be stored in a dark, dry place, in an airtight bag or box. Single slices of bread can also be frozen.

  • Keep eggs in an airtight container on a refrigerator shelf, not in the door.

  • Potatoes are best kept in a dry, dark place.

  • Fruits such as tomatoes, melons, aubergine, bananas, and peppers should be kept at room temperature.

Get Familiar with the Fridge

Knowing where to store different types of food in the fridge can help them last longer.

Upper shelves: leftovers, drinks, yogurt

High humidity drawers: fruit, herbs, mushrooms

Low humidity drawers: green vegetables, carrots

Lower shelves: meat, fish

Door: sauces, butter, milk

Be Freezer-Friendly

The freezer is a great money-saving tool in our kitchen. Buying bulk frozen packs is often cheaper than fresh and just as nutritious. Pre-prepared frozen fruits, veggies, meat, and poultry save time on chopping and washing. Ensure 100% pure vegetables are the only ingredient and check frozen meat for added seasonings or sauces.

When freezing leftovers or batch-cooked portions, remember to:

  • Cool food before freezing: Avoid placing warm food in the fridge or freezer.

  • Freeze in portions: Prevent having to defrost large quantities for a single serving.

  • Label what you freeze: Helps you remember what’s inside.

  • Seal food well: Prevents ‘Freezer Burn’ that can affect taste and texture.

What Can I Freeze?

  • Portions of butter, margarine

  • Grated cheese

  • Bread (frozen slices can go straight in the toaster)

  • Milk (for up to one month)

  • Raw pastry

  • Yoghurt & cream

  • Raw eggs (removed from their shells)

  • Portions of stock

  • Leftovers & pre prepared food

Oliver’s Top Tip: ‘Some people believe frozen food isn’t as good quality as fresh, but they are wrong! In some cases, frozen foods have even more vitamins and minerals because fresh foods lose them over time while freezing preserves nutrients. Frozen is a great way for the people we support to enjoy a nutritious diet.’
